National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance

Capital Chapter

WHY SHOULD I SUPPORT NAAFA?

An estimated 38 million Americans are significantly heavier than average, and face societal and institutional bias because of their size. Fat people are discriminated against in employment, education, access to public accommodations, and access to adequate medical care. In addition, fat people are stigmatized, and are the victims of tasteless jokes and assaults on their dignity. Despite evidence that 95-98% of diets fail over three years, our thin-obsessed society continues to believe that fat people are at fault for their size.

NAAFA is the only national membership organization fighting to end size discrimination, educating the public, and working to empower fat people. People all sizes of large should support NAAFA's work in combating size discrimination. People of average size who believe that size discrimination is wrong should ally themselves with the size acceptance movement.

NAAFA’s
local chapters are of crucial in accomplishing the organization’s mission of ending size discrimination and providing fat people with the tools for self-empowerment. Chapters are NAAFA’s link local communities, and with our membership. Through chapters, NAAFA members have the opportunity to meet others who share the experience of being fat in our thin-obsessed society, to become part of an accepting community, and to work for social change.

These are are plans for the activism, education, support and social activities:

ACTIVISM: We will provide opportunities for activism and influencing public policy through letter writing campaigns to advertisers, businesses, and the media, and choosing a specific activism project and then working to accomplish it, communicating with our elected representative in local, state and federal governments.

EDUCATION: We will help educate our members so they are know the facts and can easily articulate positive messages about size acceptance. We will be having book discussions, speakers with expertise in a specific area, workshops to promote expressing views about fat and size acceptance. A chapter newsletter will also have educational pieces.

SUPPORT: We will provide a safe, comfortable environment for members to interact without fear of discrimination. If we can create this security within ourselves, we will be better suited to tackling life and making a difference in our own lives and help others. We hope to provide a support network of like minded individuals who can interact and help each other work toward positive solutions. We will be having events where members will be available to talk and listen to one another and we will also have support-related discussion events to provide members with a place to communicate their feelings.

SOCIAL: We will be having a variety of fun social events throughout the year on a monthly basis. This will provide you with opportunities to meet new friends and develop relationships.
